SUMMARY:SMS students to share short stories at FRAA Gallery
DESCRIPTION:In July\, students in the Siuslaw Middle School’s summer school program completed a week-long creative writing project to learn basic tools for writing a short story as part of Florence Regional Arts Alliance’s (FRAA) community outreach. FRAA board member and retired Siuslaw News editor Ned Hickson\, now a mystery novelist and book editor\, worked with students for an hour each day introducing fundamentals of storytelling. In addition to identifying different types of stories — from fairytales to mythology and contemporary fiction — the class discussed different genres\, narrative styles such as first- and third-person storytelling\, and ways to brainstorm ideas into a basic outline. \n\n\n\nStudents also learned how to use the five senses in writing description\, the importance of understanding the motivation of both their protagonist (hero) and antagonist (villain)\, and the roll of secondary characters. \n\n\n\nAt the end of the week\, students used a basic\, 5-point worksheet to create an outline for their one-paged stories based on: The Hook (grab the reader in the first paragraph)\, Pinch Point (cliffhanger moment)\, False Ending (protagonist seems to win but… no!)\, Actual Ending (protagonist overcomes foe)\, and The Conclusion (wrap-up and happy/sad ending). \n\n\n\nFRAA then had each story matted and framed\, and will have them on display at the FRAA Gallery throughout the month of August. They student-written stories will also be a part of the Florence Festival of Books in September as part of the youth writers’ display. \n\n\n\n“I’m really proud of these young writers and appreciate all the support from FRAA and the middle school teachers for helping make this happen\,” Hickson said. “I was so impressed with the kids know they gained a lot of confidence in writing and communication skills they’ll benefit from in school as well as life.” \n\n\n\nOn Aug. 22\, a special reception will be held for the students at the FRAA Gallery from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. \n\n\n\nThe Florence Regional Arts Alliance is located in Old Town at 120 Maple Street. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, call 541-997-4435 or visit fraaoregon.com.
